I recently came across a topic that made me curious about hedgehogs.

What makes hedgehogs so charming is, of course, their spines.

They look funny, a little dangerous, and somehow adorable at the same time.

But I also learned something quite sad—many hedgehogs are injured or killed by lawn mowers.

I looked into ways to protect them, like sounds or smells they might dislike, but in the end, the best solution is simple:
avoid mowing the lawn at night, because hedgehogs are nocturnal.

We can’t exactly teach these innocent little animals how to escape danger.

All they know is to curl up into a tight ball when they feel threatened.

This is actually their best defense—by rolling up, they expose their sharp spines and hide their soft, vulnerable parts like their face, belly, and legs.

However, this defense doesn’t work at all against machines like lawn mowers.
Instead of protecting them, it often leads to serious injury.

Interestingly, hedgehogs can curl into a ball thanks to a special circular muscle under their skin.

It works almost like a drawstring bag,복주머니, pulling their body tightly together.

Hedgehogs mainly eat insects, which is why they are sometimes called “a gardener’s friend” in the West.

They usually give birth to four or five babies at a time.

Newborn hedgehogs have soft spines, not sharp ones.

When they nurse, the babies lie flat, and their spines rest gently backward so they don’t hurt each other.

The mother feeds them from her soft belly while lying slightly on her side,
and the babies press their tiny, spine-free mouths against her.

This natural design helps keep both the mother and her babies safe.

Hearing how carefully they raise their young makes them even more endearing.

No wonder people often talk about a hedgehog’s deep love for its babies.

The more I learned about them, the more I became curious—and more affectionate toward these small, gentle creatures.

we can pause for a moment and think about the hidden lives in the grass.
