After reading this article I wondered how it's possible for just 13 year -old boy to do like that great.
.
Today I want to tell a short story about courage.
However what was outstanding in this story was not only the courage but also the judgment of a 13-year-old boy!
This story is also about something happening inside the human body.
A thirteen-year-old boy named Austin Appelbee once faced a life-or-death situation in the ocean.
His family was drifting far from shore, and someone had to bring help.
At that moment, something powerful happened inside his body.
When humans face extreme danger, the brain activates what scientists call the fight-or-flight response.
The brain sends an emergency signal, and the body quickly releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.
Adrenaline speeds up the heart, sends more oxygen to the muscles, and reduces the feeling of pain.
It allows the body to use much more energy than usual.
Another interesting thing also happens. Normally, the brain limits how much energy the body can use.
This is a safety system to prevent exhaustion.
But in a life-threatening situation, the brain can temporarily remove this limit.
At the same time, the body releases endorphins, natural chemicals that reduce pain and help a person keep moving even when they are extremely tired.
There is also a powerful psychological factor.
When people feel responsible for protecting loved ones, the brain’s emotional centers become highly active.
This protective instinct can increase determination and endurance.
Another reason this boy could survive such a long swim is the environment he grew up in.
In coastal parts of Australia, many children learn to swim from a very young age. Schools and communities often teach swimming and ocean safety because the beach is a big part of daily life.
Activities like surfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are common for teenagers.
Because of this culture, many young people feel comfortable in the ocean and develop strong swimming skills early.
Because of all these factors — the body’s emergency response, the instinct to protect family, and a lifetime of familiarity with the ocean — the boy was able to keep moving when most people would have stopped.
So this story is not only about bravery.
It is also about the incredible survival system built into the human body.
In moments of danger, the brain, the body, and the heart can work together in remarkable ways.
And sometimes, that hidden strength can save lives.
