Racing Forward: Technology, Risk, and the Future of Humanity.
Today, I’d like to talk about
the future of humanity in an age of rapid technology.
We are living in a time when technology is moving faster than ever before.
AI is developing nonstop,
and thousands of satellites are being launched into space.
These changes bring many benefits.
But they also bring serious risks.
1. Rapid Progress, Faster Than Our Thinking
Technology promises:
convenience,
speed,
and global connection.
AI can think faster than humans.
Satellite networks like Starlink aim to connect the whole world.
But there is a problem.
Technology is advancing faster than our ability to control it.
2. Known Dangers: Satellites and AI
Let me give two examples.
First, satellites in space.
When too many satellites are launched:
collisions can happen,
space debris increases,
and one accident can cause many more.
This is called the Kessler Syndrome.
Scientists already know this risk.
Still, satellites continue to be launched.
Second, AI development.
People know that AI can be dangerous if:
it spreads misinformation,
replaces jobs unfairly,
or escapes human control.
Yet AI development does not slow down.
Why does this happen?
3. The Real Reason: Competition
The main reason is competition.
Every country and every company thinks:
“If we stop, someone else will move ahead.”
So even when the danger is clear, no one wants to be the first to slow down.
This creates a situation where:
everyone knows the risk,
but no one can escape the race.
4. This Is Not New in Human History
This pattern is not new.
In the past:
nuclear weapons were developed before rules,
factories polluted the environment before laws existed.
Humanity often:
invents first,
gets hurt,
and makes rules later.
We are repeating the same pattern today.
5. Should We Only Feel Hopeless?
Not completely.
There are reasons to worry, yes.
Accidents may happen.
Damage may be unavoidable.
But there is also hope.
More people are asking:
“Just because we can do something,
does that mean we should?”
This question matters.
6. Why Concern Is Important
Being worried does not mean being negative.
It means being aware.
Awareness leads to:
responsibility,
discussion,
and eventually, better decisions.
Progress without thinking is dangerous.
Progress with reflection still has a chance.
Closing
Humanity is running forward very fast.
We may not be able to stop completely.
We may not avoid every mistake.
But as long as we are able to:
recognize the danger,
talk about it,
and care about the future,
there is still hope.
